The Importance of Continuing Professional Development

07 November 2025, Iain C. Steel

Procurement is a dynamic career, shaped by global trends, technological advancements, regulatory changes, and shifting market demands. To remain effective and competitive, procurement professionals will benefit from committing to lifelong learning through Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Whether at the start of their careers or occupying senior leadership roles, CPD ensures that procurement personnel stay relevant, informed, and capable of delivering value to their organisations. This article explores the importance of CPD at every stage of a procurement career, highlighting key areas of focus and actionable steps for professionals to develop their skills.

Early-Career Procurement Professionals: Building a Solid Foundation

For individuals new to procurement, the early career stage is critical for acquiring foundational knowledge, building technical skills, and understanding the principles that underpin the profession. Key areas for CPD include:

  1. Understanding Procurement Basics: Early-career professionals must develop a strong grasp of procurement principles, such as the procurement lifecycle, supplier selection, contract management, and compliance with regulatory frameworks. Enrolling in entry-level certifications, such as those offered by the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply (CIPS), can provide a structured learning pathway.
  2. Mastering Tools and Systems: As procurement processes become increasingly digitised, understanding e-procurement platforms, enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, and data analytics tools is essential. Gaining hands-on experience and completing training on widely used systems can be invaluable.
  3. Developing Soft Skills: Effective communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management are critical for success in procurement. At this stage, CPD should include workshops or courses on active listening, influencing techniques, and conflict resolution.

Recommended CPD Activities:

  • Attend webinars and workshops on procurement fundamentals.
  • Pursue entry-level professional certifications.
  • Participate in mentorship programs to learn from experienced practitioners.
  • Engage with professional networks to build industry connections.

Mid-Career Professionals: Expanding Expertise and Specialisation

As procurement professionals progress into mid-career roles, their focus often shifts to deepening their expertise, taking on specialised roles, and managing more complex procurement activities. CPD at this stage is vital to staying competitive and advancing to senior positions.

  1. Enhancing Technical Expertise: Mid-career professionals should aim to refine their understanding of strategic procurement practices, such as category management, supplier relationship management (SRM), and advanced contract negotiations. Advanced certifications can also provide opportunities to formalise this knowledge.
  2. Exploring Specialisations: Many professionals choose to specialise in areas such as public sector procurement, sustainability, risk management, or international trade. Specialised training and credentials tailored to these areas can differentiate mid-career professionals in the job market.
  3. Leveraging Technology for Strategic Insights: Beyond basic tools, mid-career professionals should focus on advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, and predictive analytics to optimise procurement strategies.
  4. Leadership Development: As professionals take on managerial roles, leadership skills become paramount. CPD should include training on team management, change management, and fostering collaboration across departments.

Recommended CPD Activities:

  • Pursue advanced professional certifications
  •  Attend industry conferences and seminars to stay updated on market trends.
  • Join special interest groups focused on procurement innovations.
  • Enrol in leadership or management courses to prepare for senior roles.

Senior Procurement Professionals: Driving Strategic Impact

Senior professionals, such as procurement directors, heads of procurement, or C-suite executives, are responsible for shaping procurement strategy, driving organisational transformation, and delivering value. At this stage, CPD is crucial for maintaining a competitive edge and responding to emerging challenges.

  1. Staying Ahead of Industry Trends: Senior professionals must anticipate and adapt to global trends, such as geopolitical shifts, regulatory changes, and the increasing emphasis on sustainability and social value. CPD activities should focus on thought leadership and participation in strategic forums.
  2.  Enhancing Governance and Risk Management: Leaders must ensure robust governance frameworks and mitigate risks related to compliance, cybersecurity, and supply chain disruptions. Advanced training in risk management and regulatory compliance is essential.
  3. Championing Sustainability and Innovation: Senior professionals should lead initiatives that promote environmental, social, and economic sustainability. CPD should include advanced workshops on sustainable procurement practices, circular economy principles, and ethical supply chains.
  4. Strengthening Executive Leadership Skills: At the executive level, leadership extends beyond managing teams to influencing organisational culture and driving change. CPD in areas such as strategic decision-making, stakeholder engagement, and executive communication is essential.

Recommended CPD Activities:

  • Attend executive leadership programs or MBAs with a focus on procurement.
  • Participate in global procurement summits and thought leadership events.
  • Publish white papers or speak at conferences to establish thought leadership.
  • Engage with boards or advisory panels to broaden strategic perspectives.

CPD Across All Career Stages

Regardless of career stage, there are universal principles and activities that all procurement professionals should prioritise:

  1. Embracing Lifelong Learning: CPD is not a one-time activity but a continuous journey. Professionals should regularly assess their skills, set development goals, and seek out opportunities to learn and grow.
  2. Leveraging Professional Networks: Joining professional associations such as CIPS or national procurement bodies provides access to valuable resources, networking opportunities, and industry insights.
  3. Utilising Technology for CPD: Online learning platforms, webinars, and virtual events make CPD more accessible than ever. Platforms like LinkedIn Learning, Coursera, or specialised procurement training providers offer courses tailored to varying levels of expertise.
  4. Seeking Mentorship and Coaching: Learning from experienced professionals through mentorship or executive coaching can provide valuable insights and guidance for career advancement.
  5. Tracking and Documenting CPD: Maintaining a CPD log or portfolio helps professionals track their progress, demonstrate their commitment to development, and identify gaps for further growth.

Continuing Professional Development is a cornerstone of success for procurement professionals at every career stage. Early-career professionals can build foundational skills and gain industry exposure, while mid-career practitioners can deepen their expertise and explore specialisations. Senior professionals, meanwhile, can leverage CPD to lead strategically and drive innovation.

One of the most important CPD essentials I have found in my career it to make it part of the ‘day job’, whether your employer organisation invests in CPD or not.  It’s your career – take hold of it, and enjoy the experience of learning new things every day.
